Start with the job, not the screwdriver

ReStory is a repair-shop simulation set in mid-2000s Tokyo. The workbench is only half the job: each device arrives with a customer context and a to-do list that defines what counts as complete.

Read the request before rotating or opening the device. A clean repair begins with knowing whether the task is inspection, cleaning, a part replacement, firmware work, or a combination.

The customer message explains why the device is on the bench before the repair begins.

Use one pass for each kind of work

Inspect the exterior, open the device, identify the listed components, complete cleaning or replacement, and then reassemble. Keeping those passes separate makes it easier to see which requirement remains.

If the to-do list does not update, stop before taking apart unrelated sections. Rotate the device, check the named component, and confirm that every connector or cover used in the previous step is seated.

  1. Read the request and to-do list.
  2. Inspect all visible sides.
  3. Disassemble only as far as the listed task needs.
  4. Clean, replace, or configure the named part.
  5. Reassemble and confirm every line is complete.

End with a bench check

Before returning the device, scan the bench for loose screws, covers, cables, or parts. Compare the assembled shape with the original view and reopen the to-do list.

A completed repair is not the moment the last part moves. It is the moment the device is closed, the checklist agrees, and no piece remains on the mat.
